This collaboration aims to continue the commitment to biodiversity conservation at the Hon Chong plant, Vietnam, in accordance with the agreement between INSEE Cement and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
In June 2021, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) signed a three-year agreement with INSEE Vietnam to support the company in achieving Net Positive Impact (NPI) on biodiversity by 2030. This will be done through biodiversity conservation within and around INSEE’s Hon Chong plant in Kien Luong District, Kien Giang Province.
INSEE Vietnam and IUCN Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Biodiversity Conservation
This is the latest biodiversity conservation agreement in the long-standing collaboration between the two parties. The partnership aims to continue the commitment to biodiversity conservation at the Hon Chong plant, Vietnam, following the agreement between INSEE Cement and IUCN, which was signed on November 27th, 2018, in Thailand. The goal is for both sides to meet environmental standards to ensure sustainable development and biodiversity conservation at INSEE-managed plants. Key collaborative activities under the new agreement include:
Conserving the Phu My Wetland Nature Reserve: This reserve is one of the few remaining natural grasslands in the Mekong Delta and serves as a critical habitat for the Red-crowned Crane (Antigone). Over the past decade, the habitat of this bird species has been significantly encroached upon by rice farmers and aquaculture activities. These agricultural activities have reduced the crane’s habitat from 1,070 hectares at the reserve’s establishment in 2016 to 957 hectares today. A proposed conservation measure is to conduct a study on constructing a perimeter dyke to prevent further encroachment and facilitate the conservation and restoration of the grassland ecosystem.
Establishing a Limestone Mountain Nature Reserve in Kien Luong District, Kien Giang Province: IUCN has long advocated for the establishment of the Kien Luong Limestone Mountain Nature Reserve, based on research findings indicating a high level of species endemism in the limestone ecosystem. For INSEE, sustainability is a guiding principle embedded in the company’s business strategy. Collaboration with IUCN in all countries where INSEE operates is a key step toward achieving this goal.

Throughout 13 years of collaboration in Vietnam, INSEE Cement (formerly Holcim Cement) and IUCN have worked together in various areas, including climate change mitigation, environmental awareness, efficient water usage, and biodiversity conservation for communities surrounding INSEE’s plants. INSEE is known as the only cement brand in Vietnam that has actively developed and implemented sustainable development initiatives. The company aims to integrate business growth with projects that contribute to long-term social sustainability.
With the brand philosophy "Build for Life," INSEE Vietnam strives to balance economic growth, environmental responsibility, and social commitment.
